User Name and Password
The combination of user name and password protect the private area of the Internet website and therefore the client's confidential information. If the system detects several consecutive attempts to enter with an incorrect password the user is disabled. Whenever you access the Internet banking service, our system informs you of the date of your last connection and the number of failed access attempts since that date. This procedure lets you know if anyone has unsuccessfully attempted to connect with your user name.
The first time you access our Internet banking service it will ask you for personal information to be used for the security questions system. In addition to identifying you by your user name and password, the security questions are used to verify your identity when you try to use certain functions, for example, the approval of documents.
Image and Personal Phrase
As part of the process to add you to the system, you will be asked to choose an image and a personal phrase. Both the image and phrase are shown every time you connect to the system. If they are not the image and phrase you chose, you will know that you have connected to a server designed to defraud you, simulating the Internet banking service in order to capture your user name and password. If this happens, take note of the web address and inform us immediately.
How to verify that the connection is secure
- The website address bar is green. This is indicated by a green strip in the website address bar. Banco Santander's server is certified by Verisign Inc., an international certification authority.
- The website address starts with https.
- There is an icon representing a locked padlock at the bottom of your browser.
- You saw your image and personal phrase upon signing on
Choosing a password
A good password is one that is impossible to guess, yet easy for the user to remember. There are a series of commonly accepted characteristics for secure passwords. These include:
- It is private, known only to you.
- It is secret - you should not write it down anywhere.
- It is easy to remember.
- It is difficult to guess
What it should be:
- Use upper and lower case letters, numbers, and punctuation marks.
- Use passwords at least eight characters long.
- Change your password from time to time.
- Change the default passwords.
What it should NOT be
- Do not use your user name as your password in any variation (backwards, in upper case letters, with a prefix or a suffix).
- Do not use your initials as a password in any variation (for example, initials followed by the current year and month or any other, similar combination).
- Do not use personal data (first name, last name, special dates, vehicle license plate, Identity Card, telephone number, cities, etc.).
- Do not use words included in any dictionary in any language, acronyms or keyboard sequences (qwerty).
- Do not write down your passwords on any paper or in any computer file.
- Do not use obvious sequences (123456768, 111111111, admin1234).
- Do not disclose your passwords to ANYONE. Your password comprises personal data that only the legitimate holder should know. If you think that some third party may know your password, change it immediately.
Automatic logoff function
Whenever you access the Internet banking service our system informs you of the date of your last connection and the number of failed access attempts since that date. This procedure lets you know if anyone has unsuccessfully attempted to connect with your user name.
If while you are connected our system detects that over a certain period of time there has been no interaction between your computer and the server, your user name will be logged off automatically. This procedure prevents third parties from accessing your accounts and positions if you leave your computer connected.
